Research Abstract No.54 This longitudinal study had three main objectives : To find out cognitive and noncognitivecharacteristic development of primary school students:; to learn how early the parents trained theirchildren to be independent; and to find significant predictors of the studentsí achievement.. The projectfollowed the Prathom 1 (Grade 1) students through Prathom 6 (the end of primary level). The samplestarted with 380 Prathom 1 students and ended up with 266 students at Prathom 6 level. The resultsshowed that (1) the cognitive characteristics developed more rapidly than the noncognitive ones; (2)parents in Bangkok trained their childen to be independent earlier than those outside Bangkok; and (3) thecognitive variables were more important than the noncognitive ones in predicting the studentsachievement.
